AQA Specification A 3702
This specification provides a route to a 'core' GCSE qualification which is essential both to employment and further/higher education. Candidates develop understanding and skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
Students follow the AQA syllabus, which consists of four units:
- Unit 1 - Non-fiction, Media and Information
- Unit 2 - Different Cultures, Analysis and Argument
- Unit 3 - Literary Heritage and Imaginative Writing (coursework)
- Unit 4 - Speaking and Listening

Unit 3 is a coursework module. It assesses three contexts of speaking and listening activities: individual, group and drama. It is worth 20% of the final mark. Students are required to submit work in three assessment contexts:
- extended individual contribution
- group discussion and interaction
- drama-focused activity
Unit 4 is also a coursework option, for which students submit a folder containing three items of coursework:
- writing to explore, imagine and entertain
- reading in the English literary heritage - Shakespeare.
- reading in the English literary heritage - poetry (pre- or post-1914)
Coursework is marked by the teacher and then despatched to a moderator for checking.
Students should possess a good dictionary and thesaurus. The school will provide copies of the textbook GCSE English Specification A Anthology and a Shakespeare text.
