How and why do Hindus worship at home and in the Mandir?
In this unit, children are introduced to Hinduism by exploring ways in which Hindus worship and finding out why worship is important to members of the Hindu community. They have the opportunity to look at the key features of Hindu worship and what worship means to a believer. They will explore the ways some Hindus use prayer as part of their worship and will learn the importance of community and the responsibilities that a religious community has about the way they live in the wider world.
Celebrations: A Christmas Journey
This unit involves children looking at the ways in which Christians today find meaning in the accounts and stories of Jesus' birth. Through the theme of 'journeys', using a variety of visual and written sources and music, children learn about and develop their understanding of some of the ways in which Christians celebrate Jesus' birth. They examine and reflect upon concepts of pilgrimage. They encounter biblical stories at first hand, and develop their understanding of the use of symbolic language. They develop their understanding of how religious beliefs and ideas can be conveyed through the expressive arts.
Why is Easter Important for Christians?
This unit explores the events leading to the death and resurrection of Jesus and the meaning and significance of these events for Christians. Children will look at the important events leading up to Easter including Lent, Palm Sunday, the Last Supper and Easter Sunday. Children will learn the story of Jesus from his entry into Jerusalem to the resurrection and name the symbols of bread and wine from the Last Supper. They will learn the basic beliefs of Christians about Jesus’ death and resurrection and understand why the cross is a significant symbol for Christians. This unit provides an opportunity for children to identify some experiences which cause people to wonder and question including questions which are difficult to answer.
What religions are represented in our neighbourhood?
In this unit, children learn about religion in Ilford by collecting and interpreting evidence from a range of sources. They develop their understanding of the ways in which individuals and communities express their religious identity. Children will be able to identify a number of religious traditions in our local neighbourhood and learn about beliefs and practices at a local place of worship. Children will learn how to compare and contrast key features of different religious customs in Ilford.
